CWE-8 J2EE Misconfiguration: Entity Bean Declared Remote
- Abstraction
- Variant
- Structure
- Simple
- Status
- Incomplete
- Languages
- Java
- CWE version
- 5.0
Description
The J2EE application exposes a remote interface for an entity bean, but it also exposes methods that get or set the bean's data.
Common consequences
• Confidentiality, Integrity: Read Application Data, Modify Application Data — These methods could be leveraged to read sensitive information, or to change data in ways that violate the application's expectations, potentially leading to other vulnerabilities.
Potential mitigations
• [Implementation] Declare Java beans "local" when possible. When a bean must be remotely accessible, make sure that sensitive information is not exposed, and ensure that the application logic performs appropriate validation of any data that might be modified by an attacker.
Detection methods
• Automated Static Analysis: Automated static analysis, commonly referred to as Static Application Security Testing (SAST), can find some instances of this weakness by analyzing source code (or binary/compiled code) without having to execute it. Typically, this is done by building a model of data flow and control flow, then searching for potentially-vulnerable patterns that connect "sources" (origins of input) with "sinks" (destinations where the data interacts with external components, a lower layer such as the OS, etc.)
